Where the data comes from.

Our latest update called 'Playlist Discovery' ranks independent Spotify playlists by real life artist discovery, not follower count. Read below how we found out which playlists drive real traffic and made this data searchable by genre and artist size.

It all starts with Spotify's own Discovered On data.

Artist profiles on Spotify show a section called Discovered On: the playlists Spotify says drove that artist's streams. Spotify only shows it one artist at a time and never adds it up.

  • Real streams, not estimates. Discovered On comes straight from Spotify. Nothing on this page is estimated, modeled, or self-reported.
  • We analyzed more than 100,000 artists, from bedroom acts to superstars, and the list keeps growing every day.
  • Almost nobody slips through. Nearly every artist above 10K monthly listeners shows this data on their profile.
  • Only playlists you can actually pitch. Spotify's own playlists take no submissions, so we rank the independent playlists where real discovery happens and where a pitch can actually land.

We flipped the data: from artists to playlists.

Spotify tells you which playlists discovered an artist. We turned that around to show which artists a playlist has discovered. That is what makes playlists comparable.

The same data, sorted by playlist instead of artist. Because we know every artist's genre and size, each playlist automatically shows what kind of artists it discovers and at what career stage. Nothing is guessed or assigned by hand.

What you see for every playlist.

The result is a searchable chart of more than 100,000 independent playlists, by genre and artist size. Every playlist shows a few simple facts:

ColumnWhat it measures
Artists discoveredHow many artists found real listeners through this playlist, according to Spotify.
Typical artist sizeThe monthly listeners of the artists this playlist breaks. Tells you whether it works for artists at your level.
Genre fitHow much of the playlist's discovery happens in your genre.
FollowersFollower count, for context only. Followers can be botted; real discovery cannot. That is why we rank by discovery, not follower count.
Curator contactMarked where a contact route is available, so you know which curators you can reach before you pitch.

A look inside the charts.

For every genre, the charts list the playlists Spotify's own Discovered On data says are discovering artists right now, filtered by artist size and marked where the curator can be reached. Here is a preview of the top ten per genre. Names are blurred in this preview.
